The Problem of Agency in Scientific Distributed Cognitive Systems

چکیده

From the perspective of cognitive science, it is illuminating to think of much contemporary scientific research as taking place in distributed cognitive systems. This is particularly true of large-scale experimental and observational systems such as the Hubble Telescope. Clark, Hutchins, Knorr-Cetina, and Latour insist or imply such a move requires expanding our notions of knowledge, mind, and even consciousness. Whether this is correct seems to me not a straightforward factual question. Rather, the issue seems to be how best to develop a theoretical understanding of such systems appropriate to the study of science and technology. I argue that there is no need to attribute to such systems as a whole any form of cognitive agency. We can well understand the importance of such systems while restricting agency to the human components. The implication is that we think of these large-scale distributed cognitive systems not so much as unified wholes, but as hybrid systems including both physical artifacts and ordinary humans. Scientific Cognition as Distributed Cognition In previous publications, I have argued that it is illuminating to think of much contemporary scientific research as typically taking place within distributed cognitive systems.1 This is particularly true of research involving large-scale experimental and observational systems such as particle accelerators at CERN or The Hubble Telescope. Many of those who have been developing notions of distributed cognition, or related notions, have been tempted to suppose that this way of thinking requires extending our ∗Department of Philosophy, Center for Philosophy of Science, University of Minnesota. Computation and Agency in Scientific Cognition

I begin with a representative example of a contemporary scientific activity, observations using the Hubble Space Telescope, and ask what approaches within the cognitive sciences seem most fruitful as aids in developing an overall account of this sort of scientific activity. After presenting the Hubble Space Telescope System and a recent result, I consider applying a standard computational parad...

Static Task Allocation in Distributed Systems Using Parallel Genetic Algorithm

Over the past two decades, PC speeds have increased from a few instructions per second to several million instructions per second. The tremendous speed of today's networks as well as the increasing need for high-performance systems has made researchers interested in parallel and distributed computing. The rapid growth of distributed systems has led to a variety of problems. Task allocation is a...

Load Model Effect Assessment on Optimal Distributed Generation Sizing and Allocation Using Improved Harmony Search Algorithm

The operation of a distribution system in the presence of distributed generation systems has someadvantages and challenges. Optimal sizing and siting of DG systems has economic, technical, andenvironmental benefits in distribution systems. Improper selection of DG systems can reduce theseadvantages or even result in deterioration in the normal operation of the distribution system. DGallocation ...

Congestion Management in Power Systems Via Intelligent Method

In the deregulated power systems, transmission congestion is one of the significant and main problems of the electrical networks which can cause incremental cost in the energy. This problem has resulted to new challenging issues in different parts of power systems which there was not in the traditional systems or at least had very little importance. Transmission congestion happens when the maxi...

Hybrid Meta-heuristic Algorithm for Task Assignment Problem

Task assignment problem (TAP) involves assigning a number of tasks to a number of processors in distributed computing systems and its objective is to minimize the sum of the total execution and communication costs, subject to all of the resource constraints. TAP is a combinatorial optimization problem and NP-complete. This paper proposes a hybrid meta-heuristic algorithm for solving TAP in a ...
